If you decide you want to use the SSH solution, you may want to use dynamic DNS (DDNS) as well.  That way, you can assign a name to your system.   Before exposing your system to the internet, make sure your user names and passwords aren't easy to guess.  For example, if you are using a Raspberry Pi as your host, be sure to change the password of the "pi" account to something other than "raspberry".
